School Advisory Council

The Catholic school is an expression of the education mission of its parish and of the diocese.  Therefore the Pastor is responsible to the Bishop for the administration of the “total” parish school.  The Pastor delegates according to diocesan policy, the administrative responsibilities to the school principal, who is accountable to the Pastor.  The principal functions as the chief administrator of the school and is a member of the parish staff.  Regular and open communication between the pastor and the principal are essential.

Just as the Parish Council is advisory to the Pastor on behalf of the total parish community, so too is the School Advisory Council advisory to the Pastor and works with the principal for the good of the school and parish communities.

The full Council will meet bi-monthly.

Purposes and Functions

St. John’s School Advisory Council is a body whose members are selected to participate in decision-making in designated areas of responsibility.  The council is established in accord with diocesan policy, to assist the Pastor and Principal in the governance of the parish school.  In order for a council meeting to consider a policy matter, which the Pastor has approved for voting, the Council must have the Pastor, Principal, and two-thirds of the Council members present.

  • When the council members meet to agree on a policy matter the final decision must be approved by the Pastor before being implemented and binding to all.
  • The role of the School Advisory Council is to support the principal in implementing all final policies.

The areas in which the council has responsibility and will be consulted are:

  • Strategic Planning-reevaluate every five years
  • Policy Development
  • Financial Planning and Management- evaluate monthly
  • Development and Institutional Advancement
  • Selection of the principal - per diocesan guidelines
  • Evaluation of School Advisory Council Year
  • Communication - reevaluate School Mission Statement yearly

Standing Committees of the Advisory Council are:

1. Executive Committee
2. Building and Grounds Committee
3. Technology Committee

4. Development and Public Relations Committee

5. Finance Committee
6. Planning and Policy
